Pet insurance is much the same as human insurance; you get accident and illness protection. In other words, the insurance company will agree to pay any costs incurred should your animal become sick or be injured in an accident. Depending on the type of insurance policy you obtain, you are also entitled to coverage should your animal die or go missing.

When you purchase your pet insurance online or request a quote, you will be required to fill out a standard form that asks for average information, such as what breed you own, how old, etc. Depending on the information, you can find insurance with premiums as low as $15 each month. Your premiums will be affected by how old your animal is, its health, as well as what kind of animal it is.

As stated, there are many different types of insurance for pets. There is even third part coverage to protect you in the event that your animal harms someone else’s animal or property. There are several different levels to choose from, such as Senior or Standard plans. Most insurance plans also allow you to choose which veterinarian you would like to take your animal to.

Just like with human insurance, the insurance provider agrees to pay the physician, or veterinarian, according to a payment schedule worked out between the insurance company and the physician. You may wonder why there are so many people who have insurance yet their pets do not, when health care costs are the same for both. However, there seems to be a lot of fine print when it comes to pet insurance. You may be wondering if it is actually worth the money.

One benefit of pet insurance is that, should your animal go missing, most coverage providers will pay for you to advertise in your area in the local newspapers so that you can try to locate your furry friend. Pet healthcare costs are continuing to rise, and many just find pet insurance to be the logical answer. Many owners take this insurance just to ensure that their animal gets the very best treatment should something occur.

Most policies have an excess, which is much the same as a deductible. It is an amount that you have to pay before the insurance company pays their portion. If you do not think that insurance is the way to go for you personally, there are other options that you can discuss with your veterinarian. When seeking insurance, quotes are always free so that you can find the best deal for your situation.

Wanting to make sure we take care of our pets is nothing new. But for some people, the idea of pet insurance is unexplored territory. If you have been toying with the idea of getting quotes for pet insurance, there are several factors to take into consideration. Here are a few tips to help you pick the pet insurance policy that is right for you and your animal.

Before you begin to evaluated any pet insurance policy, sit down and compile your wish list of coverage you hope to find available. This may include such things as a prescription co-payment plan, low deductibles for surgery and other major medical matters, some price breaks on annual checkups, teeth cleanings, de clawing, or other health measures you normally take to ensure your pet’s sound condition. Keep in mind you may not find a pet insurance policy that will cover everything on your wish list, so prioritize your items. This will help ensure you do get a policy that addresses the healthcare needs you consider most important.

Perhaps one of the most crucial things to consider when evaluating getting quotes for pet insurance is whether or not your current veterinarian accepts a give policy. This can easily be determined, by asking the office manager at the vet’s office. They will be happy to give you the names of various insurance providers they work with. By finding out who your current vet works with, you already have a small degree of endorsement of those companies. Just like doctors, veterinarians do not like to work with insurance companies that make filing claims difficult, or who are slow to pay.

Once you have a list of potential carriers, do some research on the pet insurance policies each one offers. Chances are they all will have a fairly comprehensive selection of policy types to choose from. Take your wish list and note which ones offer coverage for the items on your wish list. You can use this data to arrive at three or so potential pet insurance carriers that will cover your pet for the health concerns you believe are most important.

At this juncture, let the interview begin. Contact a representative of each of the pet insurance providers you have selected and schedule appointments to discuss a policy for your pet. Make sure that during the course of the appointment, you double-check the information you read online, just to make sure it is current and correct. The agent or representative may also have some questions for you about the health of your pet, so be prepared to answer any of those. Between the two of you, the agent should have enough information assembled to offer you a policy that will be a good fit. However, do not sign anything until you have met with representatives of all the pet insurance providers you’ve contacted.

Once you have firm quotes for pet insurance and information from all three of the finalists, compare and contrast them until you narrow the running down to two, and then finally one. Always make sure you contact all three to let them know of your decision. Should things not work out with the pet insurance provider you select, you do want to be on cordial terms with your other two contacts when the time comes to renew your policy.

Nobody wants to consider the possibility of their kitty being injured or becoming ill with a chronic health condition. But every year, one in three pets will need emergency vet care. And two out of three will develop a serious health problem over the course of their lifetimes. Purchasing pet medical insurance now can prevent a heartbreaking choice later.

Before you buy any cat health insurance, do your homework. There are many companies selling many different policies. It can be confusing, so compare the policies carefully so you can make a wise decision.

Ask the following questions:

    * Has the company been in business for fifteen or twenty years? This is a competitive business, and companies selling health insurance for pets come and go. You don’t want to find out your company is out of business when you try to file a claim.
* Has your vet ever heard of this company or had dealings with it in the past? He or she may be able to suggest a good company or one to avoid.
* Can you go to any licensed vet, or are you limited to a certain network? Is emergency care covered? What about in the middle of the night? Now is the time to get answers, not when you are in the midst of a crisis.
* What exactly is covered? This will determine your how high your premiums are. If all accidents and illnesses are covered, your premiums will be a lot higher than if you have a policy that covers accidents only or accidents and certain conditions.
* What about pre-existing conditions? What are they? If your cat is treated for a condition, will it be considered “pre-existing” when you renew? If so, further treatment for the condition won’t be covered.
* Should you choose a high or low deductible? If your deductible is higher, your premiums will be lower. But you’ll pay more every time your kitty goes to the vet. So think about how many times a year your feline visits the vet. A higher deductible is fine for a pet with few vet visits, but may not be so great for one who needs more vet care.
* Is there a penalty for changing your plan or deductible? You want to be able to do this in case you have some financial problems and need to change your plan.
* What conditions are excluded? Understand exactly what is and is not covered so you don’t wind up with an unpleasant surprise later on. Are there caps on the amount the company will pay each year, or for a certain condition? Is there a lifetime cap per animal?
* Can you renew the policy when your pet gets older? Some companies won’t insure older pets. How much will your premiums increase as your pet ages?
* How is your reimbursement calculated? Some companies pay a certain percentage of the amount you paid your vet. Others have a benefit schedule where they decide how much they’ll pay for a certain treatment. Then they pay a percentage of this amount, which may be less than what you’ve already paid. Be sure you and your insurance company are on the same page when it comes to reimbursements.
* Is the pet insurance company licensed in your state?
